Round 1: Twitter4Trainers Limps Out of the Gate

In the 60s people said, “what if they gave a war and nobody came?’ Well, my first foray into building an online community for a group of trainers is starting to feel like that. Except I gave an online community and a few people came but they are primarily mute and disengaged.

I recently started a Twitter page for a group of trainers; the purpose to share ideas, trainer videos and best practices. I envisioned a Utopian online community where people grew from the information, cracked wise, and felt they were off the island and part of a community. This was my first shot as a community manager and so far I feel like I am more of a retirement community manager. Like a retirement community, I am constantly reminding the residents of where they are, what they need to do, and encourage them not to fear the internet. The only difference is the average age is 35 and there is a lot less prune juice.

Granted, this was week one of the launch, and I admit that our company doesn’t exactly foster participation in social networking for business reasons. Being painfully aware of this fact, I delivered a clear job aid outlining a set-up protocol designed to keep our intellectual property as secure as possible on Twitter. Alas, the best laid plans of mice and men often...well you get the point.

However, just like the hippie movement of the 60s I will persevere. My symbol will not be tie-dye and peace signs but a Twitter logo that is eerily similar to the Woodstock dove. Where’s Bob Dylan when you need him?
