As a student of rhetoric, another term you should familiarize yourself with is "master narrative." This term applies to the "story" in the article. Sometimes this "story" might distract the reader from serious issues. Jay Rosen's article discusses how the "horse race" narrative keeps the reader from learning anything substantive about presidential candidates.

Could the master narrative, in fact, be a tool used by writers to not only distract readers from learning anything substantive from the story, but to manipulate the information to achieve the desired result of that particular writer's own agenda? Are news agencies really disseminating objective information, or are they becoming political activists?
